The Picture
Gets Smaller

Craig Champion October 2026 5 min read

Under pressure, the picture gets smaller. That is the blind spot. It is not a lack of character, and it is not a lack of a plan. A plan can be sitting on the bench and still be out of view, because two things drop out at the same time.

"You miss the risk. You also miss the help."

The dark spot is the risk

A fair question starts to sound like an attack. A client asking where the job sits, a principal asking for the number, a mate asking if you are all right. You go quiet. Then you take the shortcut that gets you through today: a price that is too low, a date you cannot keep, a figure you will not look at.

None of those feel like a decision. They feel like the only way to get off the phone. The risk is already in the job. You just cannot see it while the picture is that small.

The bright spot is the strength

The same narrowing hides what would actually help.

Perspective is the full picture

Perspective is seeing both spots before a dollar is committed or a person is sent. Not the story you tell at the yard. The one you already know.

Write five things down, in plain words:

That is phase 01 of HQPM. It comes before alignment, before the crew is sent, and before the price is locked. If one of those five moves later, change it in the place it belongs and confirm it again. Do not rewrite the plan from inside the small picture.

If the weight is you, not the job, that half lives on its own stair. What You Stop Seeing is in the Champion Wellbeing Journal. This note stays with the work.

The HQPM self-assessment starts on Perspective. Twenty questions, about ten minutes, in the browser. It shows where the picture is clear and where it has gone small.
